Riva Lehrer, a child with spina bifida, was born in 1958. Children with such abnormalities are supposed to have less chance to survive. Yet she survived. Her parents and doctors were dogged to “fix” her, sending messages again and again that she is broken. She is disabled and can’t enjoy a normal life, can’t have a job, a happy relationship, or an independent life. Riva tries her best to be a good girl and endures countless medical interventions and in the quest to be cured she bears all the hardships she faces.
Her life takes a turn when Riva, as an adult, is invited to join a group of artists, writers, and performers who are building Disability Culture.

Riva explains the succession of relationships and the rise of her career as an artist. She also documents how her work explores the intersection of gender sexuality and disability. Lehrer says that international debates, as in Belgium and Netherlands, persist over whether to treat children like her and observes that “disability is the great billboard of human truth”.
She calls herself a golem, shapeless mass. According to Lehrer, golems are built in order to serve a specific purpose. Adam, it is said, was built for the glory of God. The Golem of Prague was built to save the Jews from a pogrom.
